Tarik Luqmaan Trotter, known professionally as Black Thought, was born on October 3, 1971, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He faced profound adversities from an early age; his father was murdered when Trotter was only a year old, and his mother was killed during his high school years. Despite these hardships, Trotter channeled his energy into music and art, tagging graffiti and briefly dabbling in drug dealing before refocusing on his education and musical ambitions. He attended the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts and later Millersville University, where he studied journalism.
