He is renowned for being the first person to climb all 14 eight-thousanders (mountains over 8,000 meters above sea level) without the use of supplementary oxygen. Messner achieved the first solo ascent of Mount Everest and the first ascent of Everest without supplemental oxygen, alongside Peter Habeler.
